Mark Florman is Chairman of Spayne Lindsay & Co.

Mark served as CEO to the BVCA from 2011 to 2013. From the mid-1980s as a Director of County Bank and as a Partner of Enskilda Securities, he advised on corporate restructurings, M&A and equity capital markets. Mark co-founded Maizels, Westerberg & Co. which became a leading independent firm in M&A and corporate restructurings. Between 2001 and 2008 he was Senior Principal at the private equity firm Doughty Hanson.

In 2004, Mark co-founded the Centre for Social Justice, a UK think tank focused on social justice and poverty. Mark also occupies a number of positions in business and philanthropy and speaks widely on the new capitalism, driven by markets and consumers.

Tom Lindsay|Partner

Tom is a founding Partner of Spayne Lindsay & Co. He is a Chartered Accountant and graduate of Manchester University and has over 25 years investment banking experience, having worked for Flemings and Lehman Brothers, both in the UK and USA. Tom founded Spayne Lindsay & Co, with John Spayne, in 2004.

John Spayne|Partner

John is a founding partner of Spayne Lindsay & Co. John has specialized in investment banking for the Consumer sector for over 25 years. He was formerly a Director of Flemings and then a Managing Director at Lehman Brothers before founding Spayne Lindsay & Co in 2004.

Prior to his City career, John worked for the Crown Prince of Ethiopia, son of Emperor Haile Selassie; more recently he was Chairman, now a Patron, of Contemporary Applied Arts (www.caa.org.uk) and a Trustee of the Creative Foundation (www.creativefoundation.org.uk).

Jonathon Martin|Partner

Jonathon is a Partner in the business, having joined in 2005. He is a graduate of St Andrews University, where he gained an M.A.(Hons) in International Relations and Management. He has over 22 years of investment banking experience across several geographies including the UK, Continental Europe, Asia, India and Africa having previously worked at Robert Fleming (based in London) and Jardine Fleming and CLSA (based in Hong Kong).

Jonathon has led many M&A transactions and advisory projects across the Consumer sector including H2 Equity Partners’ sale of Hancocks, Mayfair’s acquisition of YO! Sushi, the sale of Rollover to Kerry Group, Fred Perry’s acquisition of Lavenham, Dr Oetker’s acquisition of Fun Foods in India, the sale of FE International by Mitsui and Unilever’s sale of Ragu and Chicken Tonight.  Jonathon has also led several advisory assignments for consumer companies in the UK and internationally including Carpetright plc, Dreams and Premier Foods.

Shaun is a Partner in the business, having joined in 2005. He is a graduate of Cambridge University, where he studied Economics and is a Chartered Accountant, having qualified with Arthur Andersen.

Shaun has led a large number of M&A transactions and advisory projects across the Consumer sector including the acquisition of Symington’s by Intermediate Capital Group, the sale of Clipper Tea to Wessanen and the £550m sale of Quorn to Monde Nissin.

Prior to joining Spayne Lindsay & Co, Shaun spent four years at Arthur Andersen, and later Deloitte, where he worked in the real estate tax team before transferring to the private equity and M&A group.

Paul Satchell|Partner

Paul is a Partner in the business, having joined in 2005. He is a graduate of Oxford University, where he studied Mathematics and is a Chartered Accountant, having qualified with Arthur Andersen.

Paul has led a large number M&A transactions and advisory projects across the Consumer sector including the £200m sale of Premier Foods’ sweet spreads division to Hain Daniels, the £113m sale of Uniq to Greencore and the £205m acquisition of Quorn by Exponent Private Equity.

Prior to joining Spayne Lindsay & Co, Paul spent four years at Arthur Andersen, and later Deloitte, where he worked in the corporate tax team before transferring to Corporate Finance.

Nick Hassall|Senior Advisor

Nick is a Senior Advisor in the business and joined us after twenty-five years in the investment banking industry as a consumer and retail sector banker.  In 2012, he was appointed Global Head of Consumer and Retail Sector Investment Banking at UBS where he remained until leaving in 2017. Nick brings with him a global relationship network, experience of multiple sub-sectors and many years of cross-border M&A and IPO experience.

After graduating from Oxford University in 1992, Nick joined Robert Fleming Corporate Finance in London.  In 1996, he was seconded to Jardine Fleming in Hong Kong.  In 2000, he moved to Credit Suisse and in 2008 to UBS.  He has spent eighteen years of his career in Hong Kong, with the remainder in London.

Nick has originated and executed numerous M&A and ECM transactions across the retail and consumer products spectrum including assignments for MNCs such as Danone, PepsiCo, Diageo, Mondelez, Cargill, Unilever, Wal-Mart, Auchan, Best Buy, Samsonite, and L’Occitane.  Asian clients he has worked with include the likes of China Resources, Belle, COFCO, LGH&H, Trust-Mart, Ting-Hsin, San Miguel, and Mengniu Dairy.   He has worked with many private equity firms on both buy-side and sell-side assignments including KKR, CVC, TA Associates, Affinity, Baring Private Equity Asia, PAG, and TPG.

Guy Phillips|Chairman of the Americas

Guy Phillips is Chairman of the Americas. Guy has extensive M&A and capital markets experience with large capitalization and growth companies, entrepreneurial families, hedge funds and private equity funds.

Previously, Guy was Global Head of the Consumer Products & Retail Group at UBS Investment Bank and a member of the Investment Banking Division Executive Committee. While at UBS, he also served as Global Head of the Entrepreneurs Coverage Group which was responsible for all corporate finance activity with the firm’s entrepreneurs and families. In that role, he sat on the Executive Committee for the UBS Latin America Wealth Management Executive Committee. He also served as European Head of the Private Equity Coverage Group, where he had responsibility for providing investment banking services to leading private equity firms.

Prior to attending business school, Guy was also a Product Manager in the Chemicals business of Rhone-Poulenc S.A., a French manufacturer of specialty chemicals for a variety of industries, including the personal care and beauty industries.

Guy is the Founder of NuOrion Partners, a private investment firm, and is a Senior Advisor to 17Capital.

James Edwards|Chief Operating Officer

James is the Chief Operating Officer, having joined Spayne Lindsay & Co in 2017. He is a graduate of The University of the West of England, Bristol holding a BA (Honours) degree in Business Management.  James also holds an Extended Diploma in Strategic Leadership and Management from the UK Defence Academy.

Prior to joining Spayne Lindsay & Co James served in the British Army for 12 years where he deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan on three occasions.  James brings significant experience in planning and delivery of high profile programmes and building effective teams under intense resource constraints and pressure. Since his arrival, James has driven process efficiencies and led the implementation of significant compliance changes across both financial and data activity. James has also developed more resilience across the firm, including more structured resourcing and recruitment strategy planning.

Jens Brodersen|Senior Advisor

Jens is a Senior Advisor in the business, having joined Spayne Lindsay & Co in 2016 and leads the alcoholic beverage sector activities.   He is a seasoned M&A and strategy advisor, with over 25 years of industry and investment banking experience. Jens set up boutique advisory firm Brodersen & Co. in 2003, where he has worked with a broad range of international clients, primarily in the drinks sector.

Previously, Jens worked at two leading drinks firms, Diageo and Seagram, where he held senior positions in M&A, general management, sales & marketing, and business development. He spent his early career at investment banking firms Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse First Boston in London, Frankfurt and New York.

Jens holds an MBA from Insead and an MS in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University.  He is a native German and speaks French and conversational Spanish.

Robert Horton|Director

Robert is a Director in the business, having joined Spayne Lindsay & Co in 2012.

He has significant experience in leading domestic and cross boarder M&A transactions, working with corporate, private equity and owner manager clients. Recent transactions include advising H2 Equity Partners on the sale of Hancocks, Mayfair Equity Partners on the acquisition of Promise Gluten Free and advising founder owners on the sale of Freshcut Foods.

Prior to joining Spayne Lindsay, Robert spent seven years working in BDO’s Transaction Services Team in both New York and London, primarily focussed on buy side and sell side due diligence assignments. He is a qualified Chartered Certified Accountant and holds a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bristol.

Since joining the Spayne Lindsay & Co team, Chris has led and worked on several buy-side and sell side M&A and advisory projects including the £550m sale of Quorn to Monde Nissin, the sale of Reflex Nutrition to Associated British Foods and the £180m sale of Karro Food Group to Capvest.

Prior to joining Spayne Lindsay & Co, Chris worked as a member of the Corporate Tax advisory team at PricewaterhouseCoopers with a focus on US inbound and PE portfolio companies, many within the consumer sector. Latterly Chris worked in PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Transaction Tax/Business Recovery Services Tax team where he worked on general M&A structuring and tax restructuring solutions of distressed and insolvent companies.

Since joining the Spayne Lindsay & Co team Justine has worked on a number of transactions including the B&B Investment Partners’ acquisition of Aromatherapy Associates and the sale of Oatly.

Prior to joining Spayne Lindsay & Co Justine spent four years at Deloitte where she worked within the Banking & Capital Markets team gaining experience on audits and advisory projects in the financial services industry.
